History

The restored Bournand Castle was built on the ruins of the medieval castle of which traces can still be seen within the grounds (The façade of the watchtower) which was once an important fortress. According to the Poitou legend, one of his lords, Robin de la Haye, valiant knight, loyal to the King of France during the Hundred Year War. The sire of Bournand fought a wild beast that frightened all the surrounding villages and killed passersby. He killed the Basil (the name given to this monster) before returning home. The next day, the peasants trailed the animal to the nearby hamlet Epennes and buried the animal under the dolmen which can still be seen … So legend and reality intertwine into eternity.
